Hays County Food Bank Events and Services
By: Priscilla Hurst
The Hays County Food Bank provides various services and events as an effort to help feed families in need. They provide food five days a week at public distributions in San Marcos, Kyle, and Martindale, Texas.
"The food bank is working in conjunction with many local
events and people to do can and fund drives throughout the year. During
the summer we will have a bowling tournament and mail campaign," said Nicole George, Volunteer Coordinator.
During Thanksgiving, they also distribute "turkey boxes”, which include a 10 - 12 pound frozen turkey and all the traditional trimmings for a Thanksgiving meal.

“The Food Bank is reaching out to various groups within the community and at Texas State University to collaborate on cooking classes and nutrition education for our clients and the general public who might be interested. When possible, we would like to share some fresh vegetables and herbs that Edible San Marcos' Community Gardens will be providing us to use as part of cooking classes already being offered by the Best Food Fits program,” said L. Jane Moore, Community Relations Coordinator.
In addition, the food bank works with more than 30 partner agencies that place orders and pick up food on behalf of clients like the Hays Caldwell Women's Shelter, Communities in Schools, CTMC Hospice, the Southside Homeless Shelter, and several churches, to name a few.
“The next major initiative on the food bank's calendar is what we call the ‘Lend a Hand’ campaign. We see an increased need during the summer months when children are no longer receiving free or reduced-price breakfasts and lunches at school. Families are then responsible for providing two extra meals per child per day,” said Lisa Henggeler, Donor Development Coordinator.
